East Grinstead judo pair clinch medal success

East Grinstead, West Sussex, UK – 8th July 2013

East Grinstead pair Thomas and Oliver Nash both came away with medals from the Kent International Judo Tournament at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.

Oliver, who won silver at the Sussex County Championships earlier this year, made it a gold-medal success with decisive victories over all of his opponents in the under 50kg category. Twin brother Thomas won bronze in the under 55kg category.

“I did what I came here to do, it was my target to get in the final and I did, so I am really pleased,” said Oliver, a member of the East Grinstead-based Keisen Judo Club. “I went in expecting a medal so I put pressure on myself, although I knew I was capable,” he added.

Brother Thomas, who won Sussex Championship bronze this year, overcame a nervous defeat in the first round to come back strong, winning all of the remaining contests to take bronze in the final contest.

“It feels great to win bronze. This was a really good standard of competition, much higher than I have competed at before.” said Thomas. “Over the last year I have had to come back from having heart surgery and it’s great to be fit and winning medals again.”

The 13-year-old siblings are both members of the Sussex County squad and are targeting the British Schools Championships in 2014 as their next major event.

Keisen club coach Tim Draper said: “Both of the brothers have continued to work really hard over the last year and are always looking to push themselves and improve.”

“This event is probably one of the hardest tournaments these players have entered, with entries from a number of different European clubs.”

“I am really pleased with their performance here and they have gained invaluable experience which will help them develop and prepare for the British Schools later next year.”

Elsewhere, 9-year-old Jennie Wood started her competitive career with a bronze medal at a Red Belt Tournament in Worthing, Sussex.

Keisen Judo Club, based at the Wallis Centre in East Grinstead recently received a major boost when local business G&G Vitamins offered to sponsor the club. G&G Public Relations Manager, Nancy Grier commented “This is a brilliant result for Thomas and Oliver. We’re very proud of them both and are so pleased to be supporting Keisen.”
